MobileGov Launch

On Wednesday, January 11th, 2012, Steven VanRoekel presented a lunchtime keynote address at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) entitled “The U.S. Mobile Opportunity: Fostering a 21st Century Government Through the Power of Mobility.”  At CES, E-Gov and the General Services Administration (GSA) also launched the National Dialogue on the Federal Mobility Strategy to encourage industry and agency participation in developing the mobility strategy that will run through Friday, January 27th.  In addition to lending your own voice to the Dialogue – through submission of ideas, comments, and votes on what a Federal Mobility Strategy should include – please help us spread the word to internal and external mobility groups, web colleagues, and others to ensure a broad range of perspectives are represented.

The goals of Federal mobility strategy are to: reduce the costs of government operations through mobile, improve delivery of government services and information to citizens, engage citizens in government and increase Federal workforce productivity.  A government-wide “MobileGov” strategy will be released within the next two months, informed by feedback from the online dialogue, work with the private sector and a cross-government taskforce.  More information on realizing the “mobile opportunity” for the Federal Government and highlighting some of the great work you’re already doing in mobile is available at blog post on whitehouse.gov.

OMB Releases FedRAMP Policy Memo

OMB Releases FedRAMP Policy Memo Currently the Federal government suffers from duplicative, inconsistent, time consuming, costly, and inefficient cloud security risk management approaches. There is little incentive to leverage existing Authorizations to Operate (ATOs) among agencies, with many preferring to perform their own ATOs when other agencies have approved the same cloud systems for secure use within their agencies. Today, OMB released a policy memo establishing the Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program (FedRAMP) which will reduce the duplicative efforts, inconsistencies and cost inefficiencies when assessing and authorizing cloud systems. FedRAMP will provide a standardized approach to security assessment, authorization, and continuous monitoring for cloud products and services through standardized security requirements and controls.

FedRAMP’s unified risk management process will evaluate IT services offered by vendors on behalf of Federal agencies, saving agencies from conducting their own risk management programs. By reducing duplicative risk management efforts, FedRAMP will enable Federal agencies to focus their evaluations of IT services on their agency’s specific needs, as well as their privacy and security requirements.
