Cybersecurity Transformation and Information Sharing at the Department of Energy

We are focused on establishing productive partnerships across the federal government and with our private and public stakeholders.

Cybersecurity is a critical enabler of the Department of Energy’s (DOE) diverse mission and essential for protecting our cyber networks, computers and mobile devices. It also presents a complex challenge in an environment of constantly evolving and numerous threats. The Energy Department is committed to advancing strong cybersecurity and privacy programs, and over the past year, we have taken a number of steps to improve these services. While significant progress has been made, we must continue our efforts to ensure the security of our information and information systems.

In May, DOE established a risk management approach that aligns Departmental policy and regulations with Federal standards. In the Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO), we are bringing together entities from across the DOE complex to share ideas on strengthening this approach.

We are working with the Department of Homeland Security to advance a strong, flexible cybersecurity framework that further supports DOE mission implementation.

The Department is also standing up a Joint Cybersecurity Coordination Center (JC3), a collaborative approach to incident response and risk mitigation across DOE offices and entities. As it develops, this network will continue to make our cyber programs stronger, leveraging the Department’s best practices and capabilities and consolidating a number of disparate activities.

In addressing the complexity of cybersecurity, we are focused on establishing productive partnerships across the federal government and with our private and public stakeholders. These relationships serve as a strong foundation for continued improvements in our cybersecurity and privacy programs.

This is an exciting time as we build on this work and advance the efficient, secure transformation of information sharing and systems at the Energy Department.
