Groundbreaking IT Commodity Services TechStat at the Energy Department

This TechStat was just a beginning step in an ongoing process to assess opportunities for improving IT service delivery based on technology innovation, collaboration and strategic sourcing.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Strategic Plan encourages DOE employees to combine the best wisdom of all Department stakeholders to maximize mission success. In that spirit, my team is working to accomplish our goals while minimizing the financial overhead. Across the federal CIO community, we are working to maximize the value of IT through improved performance, leveraging new opportunities such as cloud computing services, and consolidating and streamlining common services as outlined in OMB’s 25 Point Implementation Plan.  In implementing this process, DOE held recently a TechStat to evaluate a portfolio of IT investments and improve efficiency.

The review, which we called “TechStrat,” examined federal IT commodity services across the Energy Department, such as data centers, enterprise storage, desktop computing and voice and data networks with the intention of ultimately leveraging the best solutions and practices across the complex.

During the review, we welcomed staff from the Office of Management and Budget, the Government Accountability Office and from the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs to participate in our discussions.  As we move forward with this process, we are committed to providing an open government environment and sharing lessons learned with our public and private sector partners.

This TechStrat was just a beginning step in an ongoing process to assess opportunities for improving IT service delivery based on technology innovation, collaboration and strategic sourcing.  I look forward to sharing our progress as we continue this work.
