Quick Wins Highlight Progress for DOI’s IT Transformation
As I mentioned in my last blog post DOI is identifying quarterly “Quick Wins” that address specific concerns expressed by DOI employees,demonstrate tangible progress, and provide meaningful value to end users.
While meeting with DOI employees throughout the country, we heard that improvements can be made to IT service offerings and policies to improve their job performance and satisfaction. Employees told us that they want to be able to work from anywhere and from any device while still maintaining the security of their information. They also want access to cutting-edge devices and services and prompt help desk support. One of their top requests continues to be a consistent, reliable email experience. Additionally, they want to collaborate with external partners in a secure, easy-to-share environment.
This is why we have made it our priority to meet these needs beginning with the following Quick Wins that were recently completed:
- Collaborative IT Support piloting a solution that enables local IT support from one bureau to provide services to local employees from other bureaus;
- Interim Unified Messaging Solution moving certain DOI employees to one interim email system;
- Mobile Device Management focusing on supporting employee use of mobile devices, such as tablets;
- External SharePoint Migration moves external SharePoint sites to a newer, more reliable version to increase collaboration between internal and external partners
Additional Quick Wins have been selected and will be completed by the end of the year:
- Remote Access to QuickTime allows employees to use non-Government Furnished Equipment (like a home computer) to access DOI’s time and attendance application
- Instant Messaging Implementation will work with the bureau IT staff to implement a DOI-wide instant messaging capability
- Move two DOI organizations into a consolidated network addresses one of our challenges in DOI: separate networks were historically established for most of the larger organizations. This effort consolidates two of them into a single network.
- Mobile Device Management moves us into our next phase of mobile device management: phased implementation
I’ve asked the IT Transformation team to continue identifying Quick Wins that support the IT Transformation Strategic Plan and demonstrate IT Transformation progress. Successful implementation of Quick Wins will move the Department forward in our efforts to improve IT efficiencies, lower IT costs, and help Interior’s employees work better and smarter. I look forward to sharing our progress as we complete additional Quick Wins.
