Benefits of Peer Interactions and Perspectives

I returned recently from the largest gathering of Information Technology (IT) officials from public, private, non-profit, and international organizations. This was an annual symposium that attracted over 7,500 attendees this year, including over 1,900 Chief Information Officers (CIOs). The benefit of the symposium was that it is vendor neutral–by that I mean it is not focused on a particular product, software, or company.

Enterprise Content Management (ECM)

The ECM program provides the organizational capabilities needed for continual support and delivery of the agency’s document and information needs. The NRC’s ECM program aims to keep pace with the demands of NRC’s licensing, regulatory, and adjudicatory obligations and deliver enhanced technologies to NRC users. ECM includes the processes and technologies that combine to support the full lifecycle of NRC’s information. Content management involves organizing, categorizing, and structuring information so that it is appropriately managed in all aspects of the information life cycle. These include: creation, storage, management, retrieval, and disposition. The ECM vision is to improve the quality, efficiency, and security of our regulatory and administrative business processes by providing appropriate access to information when needed, regardless of location or access device.

Mr. Darren B. Ash is the Deputy Executive Director for Corporate Management in the Executive Director’s Office of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). Mr. Ash provides policy direction, leadership, and oversight for information technology (IT), information management, information systems security, space planning and facilities management, rulemaking, acquisition management, and centralized administrative service activities at the NRC. He also serves as the agency’s Chief Information Officer, Chief Freedom of Information Act Officer, and Senior Accountable Official for Data Quality

Electronic Submittals Application

The NRC has an established electronic submittals application that allows certain information pertaining to licensing actions, associated hearings, and other regulatory matters to be transmitted to the agency electronically. The application ensures that documents sent to the NRC via the Internet are secure and unaltered during transmission. The Electronic Submittals application and associated workflows supports adjudicatory submissions (used for filings made to the Commission or Atomic Safety and Licensing Board proceedings), criminal history (used by NRC’s licensees to transmit background check information to the NRC), Fitness for Duty (used by NRC’s licensees to meet reporting requirements), and general submissions (used for transmitting reports or other electronic filings to the NRC).
